Johnson & Johnson DePuy Global Recall of 93,000 Defective All-Metal Hips
The DePuy subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson faces dealing with the recall of 93,000 metal on metal hips for high failure rate and metal poisoning for the recipients. The worst part is that they knew there was a problem and kept selling the hips anyway.

The DePuy subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson faces dealing with the recall of 93,000 metal on metal hips for high failure rate and metal poisoning for the recipients. The worst part is that they knew there was a problem and kept selling the hips.
Johnson & Johnson, and it's subsidiaries such as Janssen, Merck and DePuy, have a proven track record for ignoring regulations to protect public health in favor of profits. Incoming CEO Alex Gorsky was head of medical device and diagnostics at J&J during the time that decisions were made about the defective hip implant devices, according to the New York Times article, "J.&J.’s Next Chief Is Steeped in Sales Culture".
When the Johnson & Johnson DePuy subsidiary received a request by the FDA to submit safety data regarding the metal-on-metal hip replacement devices, the letter was simply ignored by DePuy. They did stop making new hips, but continued to sell the hips that were already made - knowingly continuing to harm people around the world with a faulty device.

I found it interesting that J&J/DePuy lawyers, Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel, sent a "Cease and Desist" letter to Maglio Christopher Toale & Pitts Law Firm on April 1, 2010 requesting that they remove any mention of the hip recall from their web site. The hip recall was initiated on August 26, 2010 so, yeah, Maglio and friends did jump the gun by a little over 4 months. I'm wondering how many letters I'd have received from J&J lawyers if I wasn't homeless? Well, since I don't know, and don't have anything better to do, I can just keep on reporting ;o)
The DOJ wants to talk with Alex Gorsky regarding Risperdal. I wonder how long it will be before they want to talk to him about his knowledge of the DePuy hip issues since he was the person in contol of overseeing the sales and safety data of the metal-on-metal hip devices? (Gee, update: Yep, DOJ is pressing for a deposition from Gorsky - ha-ha!)
The DOJ should also include Billy Weldon in all of the discussions - because Bill had to know what was going on since he was CEO of the company.
Hmm... during the research on the replacement hips, I stumbled on a lead regarding failure of DePuy replacement knees...
